A review published in Sensors (2026, Volume 26, Issue 19) systematically summarizes that three photophysical mechanisms—photovoltaic, grating, and triboelectric—can simultaneously perform optical sensing and energy conversion within the same platform. Device architectures have evolved from simple junctions to heterojunctions and tandem/stacked structures to improve spectral selectivity and energy utilization under varying illumination. The core conclusion is that balancing “sensing performance versus energy autonomy” under low-light and dynamically changing illumination remains the biggest bottleneck; future breakthroughs will rely on adaptive photonic systems plus intelligent data processing.
